Of course, a dress is the obvious choice. You want to pick one with bright colors or a piece that has a defining feature. I wouldn't suggest white because, honestly, I'm still scarred from Sharpay's spaghetti incident in High School Musical. Black is a little bland as well, and I don't think it's the statement that you want to make on the first day.
There are some other options, though, if you're not in the mood for a dress. After all, for some of us, the first day isn't exactly an exciting occasion. Also, a dress doesn't work for everyone, and it's important to show who you are in your first day outfit. Wear your favorite color, pick out your most sparkly earrings, and find those show-stopping shoes in the back of your closet.
Sure, I know that school is supposed to be about academics, and trust me, I fully support that idea. However, high school is about finding yourself too, and sometimes clothes are a wonderful way to do so. Just follow dress code; it can be taken pretty seriously, and a violation could seriously mess up your first day.
The thing is that it's not just the first day that counts, and though we cease to care by Day 3, it's essential to continue to express yourself. Keep trying new combinations, and personally, I think little details can be the most exciting part of an outfit.
Find a classic necklace or pair of earrings that make you feel beautiful. Just please make sure you don't mix gold and silver. I really hate that. Also, earrings that pass your jaw line are frowned upon in my book. Bracelets can be an interesting addition as well if you make sure they match your other jewelry.
Next, of course, are shoes, which are greatly underestimated sometimes. Shoe to outfit coordination is completely necessary, so pay attention to colors and details. If you're wearing gold earrings, please don't wear silver shoes. It's not the look you're looking for. Whether it's boots, flats, sandals, or flip flops, shoes can make or break your look.
Right now, braids are super trendy. Plus, there are a million varieties to try out and make your own. French braids, classic braids, fishtails, inside-out braids, water-fall braids, and more can complete your outfit perfectly. Drop the straightener and try something more creative this year. After all, you don't want to burn your hair off before you're legal.
The important part of all this is that you find yourself through the clothes that you wear. It doesn't matter if it's Day 1 or Day 180, you need to be happy. Clasping your favorite necklace or slipping on that special dress can give a girl the best feeling in the world.
Keep my tips in mind, and happy kommenting :)
