Let’s start off with the performances of the night. I think that the standout was honestly Selena Gomez, with “The Heart Wants What It Wants.” I haven’t been a Gomez fan at all, but I actually cried during her performance. We’ve all liked someone who isn’t healthy for us, whether it be a friend or significant other, so ii feel like we can all relate to how Selena was feeling in that moment.
Other performances by Taylor Swift, Lorde, 5SOS, Imagine Dragons, JLo, Iggy Azalea, Lil Wayne, Fergie, and One Direction were also dynamic and kept the show rolling. I was actually never bored for a moment throughout the entire program.
Now, for the winners. Honestly, I’m very opinionated about some of the winners, and I’m planning to defend a couple that took some heat.
What I like about award shows is the overall celebration of a craft. I thought that this year especially, the American Music Awards celebrated the very best in the music industry. We all like music for different reasons, and we choose artists to follow for different reasons. However, we all connect and bond over the gift of music. Whether you think a certain group is dumb or a songstress isn’t talented, it doesn’t matter when they step on stage and completely blow you away. Music is always changing and creating. Some song by some person will speak to you, and you need to celebrate that. When we can all come together to celebrate the same things, I think magic happens.
The AMAs this year absolutely blew me away, and I’m happy about how much we simply shared the gift of music with each other. Sure, there was negativity regarding some artists on social media, but I enjoyed watching the positivity in the actual venue. People couldn’t not be on their feet and dancing.
What did you think about the performances and winners this year? As always, I’m open to hearing all opinions! Happy kommenting :)
