I’ll be real and say right away that ballet is by no means my favorite style of dance. However, it truly is the basis for all other styles of dance. You want to be able to point your foot? Take ballet. You want better balance? Take ballet. You want to look graceful in everyday life? Take ballet.
But, what does that have to do with football? If you’ve ever watched Dancing with the Stars, you know that every football player comments on how tough dancing is, but really, the two things aren’t so disconnected. Maybe that’s why football players win the show so very often.
Of course, football players don’t point their toes because I mean honestly, it’s probably not possible in those cleats. And, as awesome as it would be, they don’t do combinations across the field. Also, PKs are not the same as piques. Still, I stand my ground that there are more similarities than differences between ballerinas and quarterbacks.
First, whether you’re performing in The Nutcracker or playing in the Super Bowl, there’s an immense amount of pressure, and you’re expected to do your best work. Related to this, a ton of people are watching you, but I will admit, football viewers are a bit more vocal.
Skills like balance, team work, and overall coordination are also essential to both activities. Specifically, hand-eye coordination is literally 95% of the lives of both dancers and football players. Who knew that you need the same skills to perform an adagio and throw a touchdown pass?
Granted the physical qualities of a dancer and football player probably couldn’t be more different. As they always say, don’t judge a book by its cover. I must say, to complete this post, that I like dance better. Happy kommenting :)
