Released in June, Smith’s album, In The Lonely Hour, features songs like “Money on My Mind,” “Good Thing,” and “Leave Your Lover.” The album was inspired by Smith’s love for a man who did not love him back. His signature techno beat with his crazy vocal tricks make each song fun to listen to and easy to dance to.
I’m embarrassed to admit that before researching for this post, I didn’t know that he was British. It seems that the British invasion when it comes to music is actually real. Smith has earned multiple awards in his home country before bringing his talent across the Atlantic for us Americans to hear.
A bit about Smith as a person. He was born in London and went to a Catholic school. As for influences, he is inspired by Amy Winehouse, Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey.
Smith is considered a pop, soul, and R&B singer, and I think that I agree with the definition. There’s something unique about his voice that makes me think he should have his own category, though. A couple artists like Ariana Grande and Adele make me think the same thing. Maybe it’s just me.
Smith recently sang at the MTV Video Music Awards, or VMAs. Of course, he sang his hit, “Stay With Me,” and as you may have read on Wednesday, I thought it was fantastic. As for awards, he was nominated for three: Artist to Watch, Best Male Video, and Song of The Summer. Unfortunately, Smith was not the recipient of any of the awards.
There is no word of new music from Smith, but his album did just come out two and a half months ago. Though he did not win Artist to Watch at the VMAs, I think that we should definitely keep an eye open for what he has up his sleeve.
Who’s your favorite up and coming artist right now, feel free to send me a komment about them, and I might write a post. Happy kommenting :)
