In my opinion, bathing suits are one of the most evolved pieces of clothing. Gone are the days that we wear high-waisted shorts and tank tops or romper style suits. Thank God. I'm not sure how that was ever really considered attractive.
Right now, there are some fresh trends that you need to be aware of before spending your day in the sand or by the pool. Vibrant colors, nautical patterns, and Aztec art are in. There are multiple styles that are popular currently as well.
First, Delia's is a fan of "midkinis" which are a cross between a bikini and a tankini. This bikini top lands just before the rib cage, so it covers more of your torso. Similar to this style, crop top bikinis are becoming popular as well. I like this idea a lot actually because it's a more practical look at a bikini.
Forever 21 likes high-neck tops, but I can't say that I'm going to follow this trend. Though the idea is interesting, the tan lines you're going to get are super weird.
If you have some serious issues with tan lines like the ones that high-neck tops would present, bandeau tops are perfect for a day in the summer sun. However, if you're planning on getting in the ocean or the pool, I would suggest some removal straps as a back-up plan.
Of course, there's always the classic halter top that ties around your neck. To me, this seems like a go-to style because you can really add any pattern or bottom to spice it up. Adding fringe is a big trend right now, but if you're tanning, I would not suggest the fringe idea unless, of course, you want an oddly shaped
triangle in the center of your ribs.
What's a great bikini top, though, without a great bikini bottom? As usual with anything fashion-related, nothing is really easy. Even an amazing top is a bust without the perfect match to complete. While small bandeaus are popular on top, boy shorts and fold-overs are the trend on the bottom.
I'm not really sure where the boy short trend started, but I'm pretty sure I like it. With the right top, they look quite cute, and they're comfy too. Fold-overs are boy shorts that come above your waist and literally fold over to lay on your hips. There are also fold-overs that aren't boy shorts and resemble the classic bikini bottom.
A different pattern on the hips is gaining steam as well. Mismatched patterns are popular in all aspects of clothing right now, so it's no surprise that the trend carried over to swimwear. Ties, double straps, and circles are also popular for the hips of bikini bottoms this year.
I'll leave you with my biggest piece of advice for the rest of summer: don't underestimate a one-piece. I know, I know, they're definitely not as fun as bikinis, and they don't give you as good of a tan line. However, cut-outs are huge right now, and honestly, I think a cut-out one-piece can be a perfect option.
