The show premiered in 2005, though the movie it is inspired by came out in 1935. The show is, of course, set in 1930’s Scotland and England, but the characters are still awesome in this day and time.
This is my second play and fourth show in general with the theatre program, and I’m so excited to be a part of The 39 Steps. The show is based off of an Alfred Hitchcock movie and focuses on a less than intelligent, unexpected hero named Richard Hannay.
Usually, the cast is only four people: Hannay, love interests Annabella/Margaret/Pamela, and two “clowns” that play many, many characters. Our show, however, has a cast of 18 people since we are a high school. I play Compere, who is the assistant to Mr. Memory, a magician who plays an essential part to the plot.
The show is full of slapstick jokes and wacky character, some of which are bound to steal the audience’s heart. Despite the small cast size, there are a ton of minor characters. There are Germans, Scots, and Brits that make memorable appearances throughout the show.
I really don’t want to give away too much of the plot because it is a mystery. I will say that the show has many hilarious, romantic, and odd twists. But, that’s all I’m going to say. You’ll just have to come to Susquehannock the weekend of November 21st to find out more.
Back to our production, we have a pretty awesome cast, crew, and director if I do say so myself. We’ve worked really hard to perfect authentic accents (yes with the help of YouTube), and I must mention that I’m surrounded by really talented teenage actors shown in the cast list below. Plus, our costume crew is absolutely amazing, and our stage crew is super hard-working.
I hope to see you at the show in late November, and I definitely think you should check out some YouTube videos of the play. I think it’ll be a hit.
