After a break in the boy band trend, the charts and teenage girls’ heart seem to have made a full circle (minus the cheesy choreography and hoodies).
The new trend started, in my mind anyway, when five cute boys with accents first appeared on Simon Cowell’s The X-Factor UK, and called themselves One Direction. From there, the five singers’ popularity exploded, and soon girls started calling themselves “Directioners,” each claiming a boy for herself. Some liked Niall for his boyish smile and Irish brogue while some fell for bad-boy Zayn, down-to-Earth Liam, or crazy-kid Louis. Personally, my favorite has always been Harry because he looks so darn cuddly.
So, you may ask, what’s one boy band? You might not be sure that it’s really a trend. Here’s the thing: before and since One Direction became popular, tons of other 21st Century boy bands have popped up.
Big Time Rush started as a Nickelodeon TV show, but the boys soon caught the attention of the teen girls of the world. James, Carlos, Kendall, and Logan ended up transitioning their band from fiction to fact when they went on tour. Actually, One Direction was their opening act when the British boy band was just getting started. Though I thought the show was corny, the boys lasted four seasons and one movie before they decided to call it quits on a band that may have been much more successful than planned. Fun fact: member James Maslow (who has grown up quite nicely may I add) recently appeared on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars with Australian partner, Peta Murgatroyd.
Aussie boy band 5 Seconds of Summer, affectionately called 5SOS by its fans, has also tugged at the heartstrings of teenage girls all over the world. This group has a rock n’ roll vibe and plays its own instruments in concert. Right now, the four boys, Ashton, Luke, Mikey, and Calum, are most known for their hit song “She Looks So Perfect.” Personally, I don’t think that these boys aren’t quite the eye candy that some other groups are, but I must say that their sound is pretty cool. The group previously opened up for One Direction during the Take Me Home Tour, which I attended in Hershey, PA, before embarking on its own tour in its home country, Australia.
As for America, Hot Chelle Rae takes on an edgy feel with their music. The band is surprisingly from Nashville, Tennessee, but its relation to country music is literally non-existent. The group’s most famous song is “Tonight, Tonight” off its Whatever album was performed at Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest. It also released a single entitled “Don’t Say Goodnight” fairly recently. The members, Jaime, Ryan, and Nash (and past member Ian), play their own instruments as well. The band went on a world tour in 2012, but they have also supported many artists like Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and Demi Lovato as opening acts.
Similarly to One Direction, Emblem3 was first discovered on X-Factor USA. The three guys, Wesley, Keaton, and Drew, are very alternative and have an almost rap style of music. After their experience on X-Factor, which they did not win, the boys held the attention of many American girls, which is no surprise in my opinion. Because of this, they were able to release their first album Nothing to Lose after their first single “Chloe (You’re The One That I Want).” However, Drew recently decided to leave the band pursue a solo career, so I guess now it’s Emblem2?
Back in the UK, The Wanted sprung up quickly after its hit “Glad You Came.” This was not its first release, but it seemed to be its jumpstart into popularity. Though the group was accused of “copying” One Direction’s looks, it seemed to have its own sound. Also, its TV show The Wanted Life helped give insight into the lives of members and differentiate it from its competitor. Now, however, the group is taking a hiatus even though the members have promised to work together in the future.
Before You Exit may be the newest member of this boy band craze. The group consists of brothers Riley, Connor, and Toby with other members Thomas, Chris, and Ryan on back-ups and instruments. I first heard them on iTunes radio singing “I Like That” and later “Solider.” I wouldn’t say that the band is necessarily unique, but I enjoyed their lyrics and had songs stuck in my head for days. The group went on a tour entitled Dangerous in March.
It looks to me like we girls have plenty of choices for a dreamy singer husband if only we could get a reply on Twitter. Just keep tweeting, I suppose, and happy kommenting :)
