Of course, Ariana Grande is my favorite, so I thought her performance of “Break Free” to open the show was fantastic. From the set to her outfit to her beautiful voice, everything was on point in my opinion. I just think she’s so adorable, and I think, as I said yesterday, that she has a huge career in front of her. She did a great job pumping up the crowd, and I loved it as an opening to the show.
Nicki Minaj. Oh God. Well, I guess the biggest thing that went wrong was that one of her dancers was bitten by a snake, but the dancing and costuming was a close second. I really don’t think there was much talent exhibited in Nicki’s solo performance, though I'm sorry to say it.
I thought “Bang Bang,” which featured Jessie J, Nicki Minaj, and Ariana Grande was wicked though. It was super high energy, and there was some crazy vocal talent. Unfortunately, Nicki’s bad luck didn’t end with her solo, and she had a pretty bad wardrobe malfunction. Still, I thought Jessie J was a superstar in that number.
As for a new era for Taylor Swift? Hmmm, well she can’t sing live, and let’s be honest, she really shouldn’t dance. I’m also very confused on what was going on with all the acrobats in tuxes and her awkward attempts at comedy. I really loved her as a curly-haired country singer back in the day, and I really don’t think she should have transitioned to pop. So, I guess I’m a hater now, but I guess she’ll just shake shake shake shake it off. Not that her song was annoying at all.
Thank Goodness that Sam Smith was the next performance because I needed a pick-me-up. The lighting and set was so perfect for the song, and I really loved the simplicity of his performance. His voice has so much versatility, and he was right to show it off. The only bad part of his portion of the show was the fact that he was introduced by Kim Kardashian.
As usual, Usher put on a dynamic and interesting show, but I must say that I wasn’t a huge fan of his actual music. The gold microphone was nice, I suppose. I would like to ask what Nicki Minaj was wearing though… it looked like a polar bear fur. The show just really didn't go well for her in my opinion.
New rock-esc band 5 Seconds of Summer performed one of my favorite songs entitled “Amnesia.” I must say that vocals were not totally on point, but that was totally okay because I can honestly say that I felt the emotion. They did improve as the song went on as well, and hey, I would be nervous if I was performing on the VMAs too. Plus, I really like that the boys play their own instruments, and I like the members' edgy looks.
Let me just throw this out there: I don’t get the Iggy Azalea thing. That said, I do like the song that she performed with Rita Ora. Now, being a dancer myself, I guess it was cool that they featured ballet dancers, but I really don’t think it fit. Also, the camera angles on Iggy throughout the whole song were so, so weird and uncomfortable. I will admit that the staging and lights were cool though.
Maroon5’s performance may have been my favorite of the night. The outside stage was so cool and different. The slowed down beginning to “Maps” was beautiful and attention-grabbing as well. Have I mentioned that I love Adam Levine? I just think that Maroon5 has always and will always have such an awesome look, and Sunday night was no different. I totally wish I could have been there.
I’m not going to say much about Beyoncé, but I will say that she was much, much better, in my opinion, than she was at the Grammy’s. The problem is that I'm just not a huge fan of her type of music, but I really do think that she does what she does well. Though, the Greek statue thing in the beginning of her performance really freaked me out, so there’s that. There’s absolutely no denying that Bey has killer vocal chords though, and her songs really show them off. I know I’m in the minority, but I thought it was a bit drawn out too.
What was your favorite (and least favorite) performance of this year’s VMAs? Happy kommenting :)
