Grande released her first single entitled “Put Your Hearts Up” in 2011, and it didn’t seem to get much attention at first. However, her singles “The Way” feat. Mac Miller and “Baby I” quickly grabbed our ears. Suddenly her debut album, Yours Truly, was making it in the top ten on iTunes. One of her songs on the album was recorded with Nathan Sykes for the first The Mortal Instruments movie. Christmas Kisses, her holiday-themed EP, also dominated the charts around Christmas time. Now, her single “Problem” feat. Iggy Azalea is number 4 on iTunes over two months after its release. You can preorder her second album entitled My Everything starting today. Her new single “Break Free” will also be available on iTunes today following its MTV premiere.
She’s also starring in her own Nickelodeon show with Jennette McCurdy called Sam & Cat. The series follows the goofy adventures of Victorious personality, Cat Valentine, and iCarly personality, Sam Puckett.
So, why are we so fascinated with the 21-year-old powerhouse? Is it the bubbly personality? Is it her wardrobe? Was it her red velvet dyed hair (which destroyed her roots by the way)? Is it because she toured with the Justin Bieber? Maybe it's her Spanglish versions of songs? I don’t think so. I think Ariana Grande represents powerful girls who aren’t afraid to speak their minds. While other artists write sappy love songs about lost flames, Grande tells boys that she’s got “one less problem without you” or that he only has to stay "as long as she's the name on your tattooed heart."
Also, I think Grande makes herself extremely relatable on her social media accounts, which may be a reason for her seemingly sudden explosion of fame within the last year. She takes time to respond to her Twitter mentions, and she posts pictures and videos on Instagram to let her “Arianators” know what she’s up to. She’s also adopted three dogs, making her even more like your average animal-loving girl. Plus, one of her favorite TV shows is Gossip Girl, so how could you not relate to her?
Not only is she close to her fans, but she also spends a lot of time with her mother and grandparents. Grande’s half-brother, Frankie Grande, is a Broadway performer, who has appeared in Mamma Mia!. Currently, he is a contestant on CBS’s reality show, Big Brother. Like a good little sister, Ariana is now managing his Twitter account (@FrankieJGrande) and trying to “promote” him on the show. Tune in to CBS on Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST, Thursday at 9 p.m. EST, and Sunday at 8 p.m. EST to catch Frankie.
Since Grande is “a hopeless romantic,” it’s no surprise that she’s dated some boys with nice singing voices (and their faces aren’t half bad either). She caught the attention of both the Janoskians’ Jai Brooks and The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes. Not to mention that rumors of her and Justin Bieber floated around when she opened for his Believe tour.
Maybe we’re so enthralled with her because of her devilish smile and those crazy whistle notes. Whether or not we know the real reason, Grande’s singing career went from a transitional single into a phenomenon. Find out if you’re as charmed by the sassy songstress as the world seems to be by tuning in to “Total Ariana Live” on MTV tonight! Don’t forget to tell me what you think, so happy kommenting :)
